Linyanti, Botswana

Taken along the banks of the Linyanti River in northern Botswana, this male leopard was on the lookout for potential prey. A lone lechwe stood unaware by a nearby lagoon. This is the moment the leopard decided to play peekaboo with me, and not the prey.

Okavango Delta, Botswana

African sunsets are special and none more so than those in the Okavango Delta. Fortunately I was presented with a yellow-billed stork taking flight over the descending sun across the incredible Vumbura Plains.

Linyanti, Botswana

Lengau means leopard in Setswana, the native language of my favourite country in all of Africa, Botswana. This lengau leapt onto a nearby mopane tree to scan his territory for potential prey. Several feet below, he turned to me and presented himself in all his glory.

Mount Gahinga, Uganda

A lifelong ambition was met in June 2018 when I headed to Uganda to visit the mountain gorillas of the Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Pictured here is the dominant silverback of the Nyakagezi group named Mark. His size, stature, presence and physical dominance is something I will never forget. King Kong is alive and well.

Duba Plains, Botswana

In 2010 I headed to Duba in search of lion and buffalo interaction. An area best known for its prolific lion prides. The Skimmer and Tsaro pride are known for their extraordinary buffalo hunting abilities which tend to occur during daylight hours. We caught up with the Tsaro pride who were stalking the thousand strong buffalo. Eventually the pride singled out an older bull. What occurred was both violent and visceral. This is the moment the bull was finally brought down as the lioness in shot moved in to finish what the others couldn’t. The sound is something that will stay with me forever.

The Praetorian Guard were an elite unit of the Imperial Roman Army whose members served as personal bodyguards to the Roman Emperors. This young bull was his herds Praetorian Guard, blocking the path that led us to his uncles, aunts, nieces and nephews. Safe to say, we all knew who was in charge.

This mother and calf were spooked when they saw me creeping towards them, both trying to figure out what this odd looking creature was? Like synchronised swimmers they both turned at exactly same time and I seized my opportunity.

In my opinion the most beautiful of all zebras, The Grévy’s.

Captured here alongside a water buck during a morning drive at the incredible Lewa Downs Conservancy, Kenya.

Both creatures were taking a drink when they were spooked by a sound coming from behind them. Fortunately for them it was the arrival of a herd of elephants and not a pride of hungry lions.

Samburu National Reserve is an arid and particularly atmospheric landscape with a hypnotic collection of semi-desert vistas.

The young bull was captured near the banks of the Ewaso Ng’iro River in pursuit of water as an array of cumulus clouds formed above him.

These three brave male cubs were contemplating a river crossing. Part of the notorious Tsaro pride, the boys mustered the courage and strength to follow their parents into a river overrun with crocs and hippos. Not a small feat for a four month old.

Lewa Downs, Kenya

Named after François Paul Jules Grévy.

The Grévy’s zebra is now endangered throughout Africa, with there said to be less than 3000 across the continent.

Their stripes are thinner and far more compact, making them incredibly more striking than the Plains or Mountain zebra.

This stallion was wandering the plains of Lewa, with the hope of finding a mare to mate with.

A fitting picture that captures just how scarce these stunning creatures now are.

My favourite predator in the whole of Africa. Their efficiency, desire, ruthlessness, commitment and loyalty to one another is something to be admired. After several failed trips to Africa to photograph them, it wasn’t until 2011 that I was fortunate enough to have my first wild dog encounter and even more fortunate to be part of a hunt. Unfortunately for the impala, he’d stumbled into the territory of 15 dogs. Decimated within seconds, the impala stood no chance against the ferocity these guys possess. Sticks and stones may break your bones but a wild dog will shatter them.
